Friends of King Alfred Buses

LOOKING AHEAD IN 2024

The Original King Alfred Running Day which is our largest event of the year will be on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May 2024.  We expect up to 25 visiting vehicles as well as everything available from the Friends of King Alfred Buses collection, operating free bus services on a wide range of routes.  First buses will depart Winchester Broadway at 09:00 and the last just after 16:00.  There will also be services centred on St Catherine's Park & Ride and frequent buses between there and the Broadway.  Static vehicles will be on display at St Catherine's.  Regrettably due to the lack of a suitable venue there will be no transport bazaar this time - we very much hope to resume them at future events.  However, the King Alfred sales and information stand will be present next to the Guildhall by Shoal restaurant.

Late Notice!  The feeder service from Salisbury on 6th May will now stop at Salisbury London Road (opposite the Park & Ride site) at 10:20 as the coach station is unavailable.  Enquiries/bookings to ka92@blueyonder.co.uk

Plan your visit - get a programme/timetable.  On sale in Winchester Broadway from around 09:00 on 6th May

On Sunday 15th September we shall be participating in Winchester Heritage Open Days.  More information in due course.

On 8th December 2023 a serious fire broke out at Penton Mewsey where several historic buses are kept.  Amongst other vehicles not owned by us, Leyland Olympic JAA 708 was severely damaged.  Further details are in the news section under 'The Friends'.  The book which tells the story of JAA 708 is still available, with an update about the effects of the fire.  Click on 'Souvenirs & Books' for ordering information.

Lost Property Enquiries:  If you have lost something on one of our vehicles, please phone 07771 828918.

Hello

Founded in 1985, we are a Winchester based transport heritage charity whose volunteers aim to preserve the memory of R Chisnell & Sons, trading as King Alfred Motor Services.

Vehicles

We preserve all known remaining vehicles which worked for King Alfred - some 16 to be precise! We show our vehicles and often give free rides at events across the South.

Community

We meet regularly to celebrate our work and to enjoy the vehicles we preserve. Our friendly group is always welcoming of new members and are always keen to share!

As a registered charity we rely heavily on donations to continue our work, especially in these difficult times.
